Raise Your Kids and Stop Blaming Video Games

Opinion Piece by Michelle Lynn Tackett

Here we go again. More horrific mass shootings and the political shuffling is in high gear. I am used to this by now, but I gotta say something after hearing this over and over again. Some republicans are blaming video games for the mass shootings. I get so sick of hearing about this. It is getting really old.

Ever since I was a kid, I have heard this. I played Mortal Kombat, Doom, Turok, among many other games and I don’t go around shooting up places. Maybe it had to do with my parents raising me right. They taught me right from wrong and taught me to value other people, even if I didn’t agree with them or like them. It isn’t video games, it is our lack of empathy and parents who don’t raise their kids.

If you can’t raise kids properly, don’t have them. Stop blaming music, movies, books or video games for your failings as a parent and as a human being. Politicians know they can get a rise out of people who get fearful over a mass shooting, so they want to use video games to put the blame on anyone, but themselves. Look in the mirror and stop using a scapegoat to cover up your failings as a parent.
